IMAGINE PEACE at University of La Verne

Hey Beatlemaniacs!

Recently, I attended one of the most moving and heart-warming art exhibits I have ever had the pleasure of seeing; Yoko Ono's IMAGINE PEACE exhibit at the University of La Verne in Southern California. This no-cost exhibit featured some of Yoko's solo works, as well as her works with John Lennon including the iconic WAR IS OVER! If You Want It posters, images of John and Yoko's Year Of Peace, and my new personal favourite Lennon/Ono venture, NUTOPIA.

Upon entering, catalogs were available with info and insight on all the various pieces and installments. Also up for grabs were IMAGINE PEACE buttons and little flashlights representing Yoko's ONOCHORD project.

As you peruse through "Hair Peace" posters and photos from John and Yoko's "Bed-In", images from The Beatles' 1967 All You Need Is Love global broadcast, and WAR IS OVER posters, you can't help but notice the proverbial "pink elephants" in the room; a series of maps on the wall and a 14-square-foot chess set.

First, the maps are part of a participation piece called IMAGINE PEACE MAPS. The maps range from the Middle East, the USA, California, Mexico, and a complete map of the whole world. At each end of the maps are several stamps and ink pads;

"Visitors are invited to literalize their wishes by stamping the phrase 'Imagine Peace' on maps attached to the gallery walls. In this work, Ono transforms the exhibition space into the antithesis of the War Room - the Peace Room. Instead of generals positioning artillery, identifying military targets, and tracking the enemy, gallery visitors are prompted to express their wishes for peace, designating geographic locations to which they have a special affinity with the stamped text, 'Imagine Peace', becoming as much a prayer as a work of conceptual art." (from the gallery-provided catalog)

I, myself, stamped "Imagine Peace" over the Mexican states of Chiapas, in support of the Zapatista Movement, and Zacatecas; my father's home state.
I also managed to stamp this as a reminder to the "world police"...

What really put the whole Imagine Peace Maps message into perspective was seeing the map of the whole world with the "Imagine Peace" stamping heavily scattered throughout. It was a reality check-inducing representation of what the world strives for and could accomplish, of course, if we want it.

Second; As mentioned before, the exhibit also featured a 14-square-foot chess board, entitled Play It By Trust. The chess set is all-white with 2-foot, all-white game pieces for both opponents. Play It By Trust has been re-created by Ono in various different sizes; from table-top versions to the larger-than-life version seen at this exhibit. Visitors may actually play a game of chess "as long as the opponents agree on which piece belongs to each player. Los Angeles art critic, Shana Nys Dambrot describes the giant chess set as "a visceral reminder that it’s impossible to fight an enemy who is indistinguishable from yourself."

As I was leaving the gallery I was informed that Yoko Ono's Wish Tree was also on the campus of the University of La Verne in the next building over. Without hesitation, I went to see the tree and make my own wish. Below is the tree at La Verne before any wishes were made. Believe me, when I got there hundreds of wishes were already hanging on its branches.

Wish Tree has played a significant role in Yoko Ono's art exhibits since the 1980's. The concept is simple; you write your wish on a paper or a tag and simply tie it on a branch of the Wish Tree. The organic energy of the tree combined the act of making a wish is intended to aide in inspiring positivity, hope, and peace.

But who better to explain Wish Tree than Yoko Ono?...

"Wish Tree

Make a wish. Write it down on a piece of paper. Fold it and tie it around a branch of the Wish Tree.
Ask your friend to do the same.

Keep wishing.

Yoko Ono, 2011"

Ultimately, all of the wishes are sent to the Imagine Peace Tower on the Isle of Videy in Iceland and buried in capsules around the tower. So far, well over one-million wishes have been sent.

In summation, IMAGINE PEACE was a very insightful and inspiring multi-media collection of images, video, music, text, art, and love. I strongly suggest you look it up to see when the exhibit comes to a town near you.

Peace is a concept and ideal best initiated from within. You must believe peace is possible and help spread the message as far and as loudly as you can.

THE BIG BEAT Season 1 Finale

Hey Beatlemaniacs!

The inaugural season of THE BIG BEAT has been quite the experience for me. I have had the great pleasure of sharing the greatest music on Earth and have even created Beatle fans out of former non-Beatle listeners!

Even before THE BIG BEAT initially hit the air I was already promoting it heavily. I then stumbled upon TheBeatleScruffs and TheBeatleSubmarine and completely fell in love with each channel and their fab videos. Each channel is run by an international and multi-cultural group of young Beatlemaniacs who produce Beatle-related videos..

THE BIG BEAT made it's debut back on September 16 on Audio8ball.com. Showcasing the music of The Beatles and each member's respective solo music, my goal with THE BIG BEAT was to do my part in helping to spread the music of The Beatles to younger generations. With the aide of TheBeatleScruffs and TheBeatleSubmarine I had been able to capture the attention of Beatlemaniacs worldwide. Also, as a way to include The Scruffs and Submariners, I began to produce weekly recaps that recount their videos and topics expressed on their channels.

After the first 6 episodes THE BIG BEAT was pulled from Audio8ball.com...

THE BIG BEAT got a new home on 90.1 MtRock and MtRockRadio.com. MtRock is predominantly a Classic Rock station and better suited as the home for the program. So, THE BIG BEAT and I continued ahead and even gained a few more fans.

This following Thursday, December 8, will be the Season Finale of THE BIG BEAT. It just so happens that that particular date is also the day John Lennon passed away. John is my favourite Beatle for a great number of reasons and in remembrance of John, the Season Finale of THE BIG BEAT will feature a "Power Hour" of John Lennon's music.

So spread the word; THE BIG BEAT Season Finale!! Thursday, December 8 @ 4pm PT/7pm ET ONLY on 90.1 MtRock and WORLDWIDE on MtRockRadio.com!!

Kittens On Legendary Album Covers

Hey, Beatlemaniacs!!

So, as I was browsing Facebook this morning, I came across a link one of my friends posted. It's too awesome! KITTENS ON LEGENDARY ALBUM COVERS!!

In honor of the anniversary of the US release of "Double Fantasy" I decided to post this pic from the article..
To see more, including more Beatles-related covers, visit The Kitten Covers on Tumblr.

Surprise, Surprise!!

I'm sorry, I've been on a "John and Yoko" trip all day. I just love their relationship! They both loved and knew eachother like no other. It was apparent in their music together, it was apparent in their photos together, and it's apparent in this very simple video... plain and simple, they didn't need love..... they had plenty of it and shared it with one another..

Here we have John playing the melody of "Julia" and singing his bridge lyrics from "I've Got A Feeling".... simple and sweet..

Did Yoko Ono Cause the End of The Beatles? Follow-up!

After posting my last entry (Below) I visited TheBeatleSubmarine channel and finished watching Kimberly's November 17th video that I had started watching before going on the air to host The Big Beat. It's way too much of a coincidence that the day Kimberly posted her video, in which she talks about the Yoko Ono/Beatles topic, is also the day that Fingers and I have our discussion on the matter! CreEeEeEpy!

Here's Kimberly's video. She begins the Yoko topic around the 3:30 mark. But, please do yourself a favor and show some love; watch the whole vid. It's too awesome and very insightful!

Did Yoko Ono Cause the End of The Beatles? Bob and Fingers Discuss

Hey, Beatlemaniacs!

Although full podcasts of The Big Beat are in hold for now, I have been able to upload a segment of November 17th's episode of The Big Beat in which Fingers, my fellow broadcaster, and I engaged in the dispute that has had Beatlemaniacs worldwide talking; Did Yoko Ono break up The Beatles? Listen for yourself..

THE BIG BEAT - 11-17-11; Bob and Fingers Discuss by therealdjbob

I mention Linda Eastman McCartney in this dipute, not as a detractor, but she has also been blamed for the Beatles' end. I completely dig Paul and Linda's romantic and artistic relationship. As with Paul, John had a woman who supported him and helped guide him in his own direction. Why is that so hard to understand and accept?

Carly of TheBeatleScruffs took our invitation to provide her opinion on my FaceBook page..

I was happy to continue the topic with Carly after the show.
I could not have put it better than Carly in that last entry; "The Beatles ended, but Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da"

A great thanks to Fingers for joining me in the studio and to Carly for taking part in our discussion.

WELCOME, NEW BEATLESCRUFFS!!!

Recently, due to conflicting schedules, school, lack of time, etc. TheBeatleScruffs lost a few members. However they swiftly began accepting auditions for two new weekly Scruffs and one new alternate Scruff.

After careful deliberation, TheBeatleScruffs are happy to welcome their three new members;

Monday Sruff - Brad from Sydney, Australia
Friday Scruff - Katherine from New York, USA
Alternate Scruff - Renee from New Zealand

CONGRATULATIONS to the new BeatleScruffs!!!

Here's BRAD!!

..And heeeeeere's, Renee

Again, huge congrats to the new members. I will post Katherine's vid soon after she debuts on TheBeatleScruffs.

John Lennon's Tooth To Be Auctioned Off

First off, if I had the money I would definitely buy John Lennon's tooth!! I mean, come on!! IT'S JOHN LENNON'S TOOTH... FROM HIS MOUTH... FROM WHERE HE SANG ALL THOSE BEAUTIFUL SONGS..... JOHN LENNON!!!!!!!!!

Here's an excerpt of this story from CNN:

No one knows whether the tooth fairy will be in attendance, but a tooth belonging to former Beatle John Lennon will go on auction in England on November 5. American comedians have long derided the English about their teeth, but is anyone going to spend thousands of dollars on what could be one of the more unusual pieces of Beatles memorabilia?

Karen Fairweather, the owner of Omega Auction house, chuckled when asked why anyone would want to buy the molar and noted that some have expressed interest, while others think it's gross.

"We get a lot of people buying memorabilia as investments," Fairweather said. "Or it could just be a fan that really, really wants a part of John Lennon."

The molar, which has some discoloration and a cavity -- probably why it was removed by a dentist -- will be available with a reserve bidding price of just under $16,000...

Creepy John Lennon Wax Figures

This story was brought to my attention by this week's BeatleScruffs video by Carly. In her video, Carly goes on to describe each John figure. I particularly scratch my head over the one pictured below:

JOHN? NO ... CREEPY? YES!!

"HAPPY B-DAY, JOHN" From The Scruffs and Submariners!

So, it's John Lennon's birthday and TheBeatleScruffs and TheBeatleSubmariners have created video greeting to John on his 71st birthday. I'll absolutely love this fine group of Beatlemanicas for showing their love for John and sharing their wishes for his birthday.

The Submariners

The Scruffs

I would like to add my own message to John;

John, thank you for entering this world. I would not be the same person if not for what I have gained from knowing that there was such a wonderful person on this Earth such as you. I look to you, not only as a Beatle or musician, but as a man who lived a rollercoaster of a life and still managed to slow down and be there for those that needed you. I wish you weren't gone. The world really needs your love, John.

I've heard people older than me claim you as their's... how selfish and foolish of them. You, John, belong to the ages!

I've asked around, "Is it possible to miss someone you've never met?"...

Although I was born nearly eight years after you left this world, I miss you. I want you to know that you are in my heart. I am grateful that I know of your music, your art, your life, and your love. Thank you, John Lennon. Happy Birthday!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JOHN LENNON!!

It's October 9!! IT'S JOHN LENNON'S BIRTHDAY!!!

John, the world misses you and needs you desperately. Although I came after your untimely departure from this plane, I miss you every day. Thank you for bringing to us your beautiful music and your love. Thank you for expressing yourself when times were the hardest and sharing your mind with those who cared to listen. Happy Birthday, John!

Apple Co-Founder, Steve Jobs, Dead At 56

Now, I know this is not particularly a Beatles story but since Steve Jobs was the main man behind Apple, and The Beatles' music recently became available on iTunes , this is nonetheless a sad and breaking story.

I, myself, do not own any iProducts but I have seen my share of Pixar films. Steve Jobs was one of the co-founders of Pixar and he co-produced one of my all-time favourite Pixar films, Toy Story (1995)

Apple.com has released the above-posted image and this statement on their homepage:

Steve Jobs
1955-2011
"Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple"

From everyone at Audio8ball.com and 90.1 Mt Rock, you will be missed. Our best wishes go out to your family and friends.

Hey, Beatlemaniacs!!

So, I was wathcin' one of Nicole's Thursday video for TheBeatleSubmarine and in it she mentioned she was accepting requests for Beatles songs to lip-sync. George Harrison: The Beatle Who Hated Fame!?

From TheWeek.com

George Harrison wasn't really "the quiet Beatle," said his friend and Traveling Wilburys bandmate Tom Petty. "He never shut up. He was the best hang you could imagine." To those who knew Harrison well, he was also the most stubborn Beatle, the least showbizzy, even less in thrall to the band's myth than John Lennon. Harrison was fond of repeating a phrase he attributed to Mahatma Gandhi, "Create and preserve the image of your choice," which is odd, because his choice seemed to be no image at all. He was an escape artist, forever evading labels and expectations.

In his time, Harrison challenged Lennon and McCartney's songwriting primacy; almost single-handedly introduced the West to the rest of the world's music through his friendship with sitar master Ravi Shankar; became the first person to make rock 'n' roll a vehicle for both unabashed spiritual expression...

The Beatles First Recordings To Be Released

From AntiMusic.com

50 years after The Beatles first entered a recording studio, the complete collection of those tracks will be available for the first time in North America when The Beatles With Tony Sheridan: First Recordings: 50th Anniversary Edition, is released to stores November 8th on Time Life.
The 2-CD set comes with a specially-designed book that is a historical trove of concert and intimate photos taken by Astrid Kirchherr and others who were with The Beatles during the early days of their career.

The book also includes handwritten biographies by each member of the group, signed contracts, original artwork taken from posters and records, and text by Hans Olof Gottfridsson, who has spent years researching this period of the Beatles' career.

In North America, it is generally believed that the Beatles' recording career began on Capitol in 1964. Few know that it actually began on the German Polydor label in 1961...

A Near-Cookie Experience and An Arm-Flailing Kudos From TheBeatleSubmarine

Hey, Beatlemaniacs!

So this week in TheBeatleSubmarine, Sunday Submariner, Karen, did a contest in which the viewer had to guess which song she was lip-syncing. If you got them all right, she'd give you a cookie. So I figured I'd give it a try. I got 'em all right except "Your Song" by Elton John. I mistakingly said "Daniel's Song!" Whoops. Oh, well no cookie for me this time! But In Karen's recent video she named me runner-up and promoted THE BIG BEAT in her vid! YAY!!!

Also, coming back from her two week absence was Thurday Submariner, Nicole. She promised gratuitous amounts of randomness and, boy, did she deliver! From funny Beatles pics to drawing Paul with her eyes closed, This video delivered rendomness by the spoonful. She then gave me and THE BIG BEAT a thumbs up and an arm-flailing kudos!!

Check out these videos below and more on TheBeatleSubmarine YouTube channel!

TODAY IN BEATLES HISTORY!! "Mrs. Lennon" Single Release

40 years ago, September 29, 1971, Yoko Ono's first independent single "Mrs. Lennon" was released with "Midsummer New York" as its B-side track.

I particularly LOVE "Mrs. Lennon." It is such a simple song, with Ono on vocals, her husband, John, rockin' the keys, and friend and bandmate, Klaus Voorman holdin' the lows on the bass. Although having a simple structure, the song definitely inspires such a haunting atmosphere. Along with the mood and the cryptic lyrics, this track really provides a great window into the art John and Yoko made together. Both of them being unique artists and performers, they definitely opened eachothers' minds eye. I'm very glad that such a loving marriage produced music like this.

I have included the clip from John and Yoko's September 11, 1971 appearance on The Dick Cavett Show in which the pair introduce "Mrs. Lennon" and its accompanying video. The visuals, just as haunting and cryptic, further stand as a testament to the free expression that the Ono-Lennon's shared with themselves and the world.

And don't forget, be sure to listen to "THE BIG BEAT" Episode 2 Podcast, found just below this post.

TODAY IN BEATLES HISTORY!! ABBEY ROAD HITS SHELVES!!

42 years ago, September 26, 1969, Abbey Road was released! This album, although not The Beatles' final release, was the last to witness John, Paul, George, and Ringo record as a "unit." Much like 1968's The Beatles, Abbey Road's recording was less than united. Many of the songs were recorded in pieces and individually, but ultimately the record was considered one of The Beatles' most tightly recorded albums.

7th ANNUAL JOHNNY RAMONE TRIBUTE! - Oct. 1, 2011

Now, you may ask yourself, "What's a story about The Ramones doing on a Beatles blog?"

Well, in case you didn't know; The Ramones were named after Paul McCartney!!

That's right! Back in the Silver Beetles days, Paul was known under the pseudonym 'Paul Ramon.' As explained in The Beatles Anthology film, Paul felt the name "Ramon" sounded exotic, so he went with it. Paul also used the surname to anonymously check into hotels while with The Beatles.... Well, decades later a young musician named Douglas Colvin was playing guitar in an new Rock group, but soon switched over to bass (hmmm.. sounds like a bassist we all know...). Colvin was inspired by McCartney's use of the name Ramon so he suggested to the band that they all adopt the name "Ramone." That young bassist was Dee Dee Ramone... So, The Ramones were named as such because Dee Dee liked Paul's pseudonym, "Ramon".

Now that we've made the connection with The Beatles and The Ramones... ON TO THE TOPIC AT HAND!!

OCTOBER 1 marks the 7th Annual Johnny Ramone Tribute at Hollywood Forever Cemetery!! I went to last year's Tribute for the first time, and I gotta say; IT WAS A BLAST!! Radio station Indie 103 was there MC-ing and interviewing drummer Tommy Ramone, Metallica's Kirk Hammett, and many others. Also, once the day became night two movies were projected on a 20-foot mausoleum wall. The first was "Rock And Roll High School" featuring The Ramones. Then they screened one of Johnny's faves, "The Bride Of Frankenstein." This year, Horror Punk band, The Misfits will be there and the movie selections include "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert" featuring The Ramones AND "Plan B From Outer Space."

I STRONGLY SUGGEST ANYONE AND EVERYONE GO TO THIS YEAR'S TRIBUTE!! It's only 10 bucks and the money goes to fund The Johnny Ramone Research Fund for cancer. And, because it's at a cemetery and it's outdoors, you are allowed to bring picnic dinners and drinks!

Hey, Beatlemaniacs!

As you know, THE BIG BEAT is coming soon to Audio8ball.com! Well, a couple weeks back I discovered two really special YouTube Channels; "TheBeatleScruffs" and "TheBeatleSubmarine", A group of teen Beatlemaniacs who record daily videos featuring Beatles topics, discussions, opinions, reviews... BEATLES TALK OF ALL SORTS! I love seeing younger generations take the time to apply their passion for The Beatles and turn it into a unique, expressive, and insightful venture. You'd be very surprised how knowledgeable they are on The Beatles' aesthetic and history! These kids are too cool!

Well, recently Carly, the Sunday Scruff, and Fishy, Friday's Scruff, promoted THE BIG BEAT! (which you can see below) I'm so grateful for the interest they have shown THE BIG BEAT! In return I will promote them regularly on the radio show. I will produce recaps/teasers of their vids and play them on the show.

PLEASE CHECK OUT THEIR CHANNELS! You're sure to fall in love with their vids!

ROLL UP, ROLL UP!!

Hello, hello!! I'm Bob Vincent and welcome to THE BIG BEAT BLOG!! Let's get you acquainted with myself and the purpose of "THE BIG BEAT". I'm an Multiple Award-winning broadcaster with an undying passion for Rock and Roll, vinyl records, and The Beatles, which has been helpful in the development of THE BIG BEAT. THE BIG BEAT showcases the career-spanning music of The Beatles as well as their solo works, cover songs, and even their kids' and wives' music. The Beatles definitely speak for themselves, but in addition to the tunes I will also have in-studio guests ranging from Beatles-tribute acts to Beatlemaniacs like you and I.

I was born decades after The Beatles existed. As a young'n, I want to help bridge the generational gap between Rock and Roll fans. I also wish to further explore and understand The Beatles' universe by deeply immersing my heart and mind in The Beatles' music and the stories of those who were actually around to hear the latest Beatles record. I greatly look forward to sharing this timeless music with all of you!

So that's my deal. If you have any questions, concerns, requests, comments, or simply want to say "HI", feel more that free to drop me a line. Keep a lookout regularly. You never know what wacky thing I may post next.
